Cyprus New Law and New Procedures About Citizenship Applications

KOUZALIS LLC lawyers in Cyprus, who would like to inform you that the Cyprus Ministry of Interior announced new procedures for the receipt and examination of citizenship applications according to the amended law of 2023.  Exceptional consideration will be given to certain professional categories as below.

As per the article 111B(1) of the Civil Registry Law, the requirements for submission of application are:

  1. Continuous stay in Cyprus the last 12 months prior to the submission of the application. (Applicants can stay out only for 90 days in total during the 12 month period)
  2. During the last 10 years before the period of the 12 months start, applicants must spend in total 7 years in Cyprus (2555 days).
  3. Applicants to be of a good character.
  4. B1 Greek language certificate
  5. Sufficient knowledge of the political and social system of Cyprus.
  6. A proper residence of staying in the Republic and sufficient financial income for their living expenses of them and their families.
  7. Intention to stay in the Republic.

As per the article 111Β(2), requirements may differ for certain  professionals (including their family members), awarding some fondness to them, who stay in the Republic working for companies as below:

  1. Cyprus shipping companies
  2. high-tech companies related to air-force/space/computing/technology and communication/biomedical/research and development/ electrical machines, chemical substances, pharmaceutical, biogenetics and biotechnology
  3. foreign interests companies registered at the Migration Department.

For this category of Employees, the following requirements apply:

  1. Continuous stay in Cyprus the last 12 months prior to the submission of the application. (Applicants can stay out only for 90 days in total during the 12 month period)
  2. During the last 10 years before the period of the 12 months start, applicants must spend in total 3 years in Cyprus (provided that they are holders of an A2 Greek language certificate or 4 years if they are holders of a B1 Greek language certificate.
  3. Applicants to be of a good character.
  4. A2 or B1 Greek language certificate (as mentioned above)
  5. Sufficient knowledge of the political and social system of Cyprus.
  6. A proper residence of staying in the Republic and sufficient financial income for their living expenses of them and their families.
  7. Intention to stay in the Republic.
